Ipa ei tarkoita tässä blogissa Indian Pale Ale -olutta. Se on Irma Hirsjärvi-nimisen mummelin kutsumanimi.
Olen elämäni aikana tehnyt töitä muun muassa kirjastovirkailijana, kehittämis- ja tutkimusprojektien vetäjänä, tutkijana ja luovan kirjoittamisen opettajana. Tein graduni Ursula K. Le Guinin teoksesta The Dispossessed feministisenä utopiana kirjallisuuden oppiaineeseen vuonna 1994, ja väitöskirjani Faniuden siirtymiä – suomalaisen science fiction fandomin verkostot (2009) Nykykulttuurin tutkimuskeskukseen, molemmat Jyväskylän yliopistossa.
Suurin osa viimeaikaisista kotimaisista ja ulkomaisista konferensseista ja julkaisuista on liittynyt Tampereen yliopiston professori Sirkku Kotilaisen Suomen Akatemian rahoittamaan Youth Media Participation -projektiin (www.jyu.fi/ymp 2009 – 2011). Olen julkaissut artikkeleita myös liittyen kulttuurintutkimukseen, fani-tutkimukseen, tieteisfiktion ja fantasian tutkimukseen sekä luovaan kirjoittamiseen. On tullut kirjoitettua hieman myös fiktiota. Olen viihtynyt huomattavassa määrin suomalaiseen science fiction -fandomiin, luovaan kirjoittamiseen ja kirjallisuuteen liitttyvien aktiviteettien parissa.
Minulla on kaksi lasta ja kolme lastenlasta. Asun Jussi Vainikaisen kanssa Jyväskylän Kuokkalassa. Lada 1200 L on yhä elossa ja toimii.

I have a typical career of an 50 years old academic. I have worked as librarian assistant, as a coordinator of research and development projects, I am both researcher and teacher, and I have spent a considerable amount of time in all sorts of fandom and literary activities.
The majority of my latest international scientific conferences and articles have been connected with the global comparative project Youth Media Participation of professor Sirkku Kotilainen, University of Tampere (www.jyu.fi/ymp 2009 – 2011). I have visited in The International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts (ICFA), in Florida almost annually since 2004, and I am a member of FINFAR, the Finnish network of fantasy and science fiction researchers.
I have published on fandom research, fantasy, science fiction and creative writing – and some curious pieces of fiction, too. My doctoral dissertation is in Finnish (Faniuden siirtymiä, 2009) but there is an English review of it in The Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts in September 1, 2010, written by professor Liisa Rantalaiho. An example of the fiction I have written, A Weekend in the country was translated by Petri Salin. It can be found in Usva International 2006 (www.usvazine.net).
I have two children and three grandchildren. I live with Jussi Vainikainen in Jyväskylä, Finland. I still have Lada 1200 L. It is still red.
